Meaningful Iconography: Igorichev / Mother of Mercy

The icon depicts the Mother of God of Eleusa or Mercy type (Igorichev variant), which symbolizes the deepest expression of maternal love, tenderness and compassion. In the image, the little baby Jesus leans his cheek against his mother’s face and holds the edge of her robe with his fingers. The Mother of God’s thoughtful and slightly sad gaze looks away, symbolizing a sense of the future and maternal care.

The eight-pointed stars and traditional monograms (MP ΘY and IC XC) on the robe precisely follow the centuries-old canons of icon painting, making it a unique work of art with deep spiritual and aesthetic value.

Quoting Wikipedia: An icon (Greek εἰκών eikōn ‘figure’, ‘image’) is usually a painted image of a saint in the Eastern Church, usually on wood, depicting Jesus Christ, Mary, a saint, an angel, or a scene from sacred history or church history.

The base is dried, old wood that no longer cracks, which is why there are no burrs, which are usually made of raw wood on the base.

The best raw material is hardwood.

The primer is 6-8 layers of a mixture of chalk and gelatin, plus gauze. The colors are natural colored earths, which are mixed with an emulsion (egg yolk, water, wine).

Dark ochre, which is the main color, is obtained from Berlin, it is not available in Estonia.

This is followed by oiling with fast-drying linseed oil, which is good to do in the sun. Oiling and drying depend on the intensity of heating.
