Having left his father on Vargam\u00e4e, who is tired of searching for truth and justice and disappointed in his hopes for the future, the writer now turns all his attention to Andres’ son, who still has life ahead of him and who faces this life full of hope. From the second volume onwards, Indrek appears as the central figure of the novel series \u00abT\u00f5de ja \u017eiks\u00bb, connecting all parts.
\nTogether with Indrek, the writer takes the reader to a completely new atmosphere in the second volume of the novel – from the countryside to the city, from Vargam\u00e4e – to Mr. Maurus’ “first-rate” educational institution. It’s a new milieu with new characters, and only in a few pages where Indrek goes to the country in the summer, we meet old acquaintances from Vargam\u00e4e again.
\nAlso, as in the first volume of “T\u00f5e ja kriti”, Tammsaare has also used personal memories in the creation of the second volume. These memories are related to the writer’s school years at Hugo Treffner private high school in Tartu. The events of the second volume take place over three years at the turn of the last century. Tammsaare’s years of study at Treffner Gymnasium also fall in this time period.
