Description
More about the origin and history of the blanket, thanks to Jaanika Tiitson:
Ukrainian head decorations are somewhat different from ours – very lush, rich and high. Sometimes they are multiple, powerful compositions reminiscent of a turban. Mostly made of field or other simple flowers. If you depict a wreath on a girl’s head, then the wearer has colorful graceful ribbons winding from behind the ears or at the nape of the neck to the shoulders. The more colorful, the more magnificent.
I have never applied so many flowers in my life! Just thinking up techniques on how to depict different flowers in the most realistic way took a lot of time. The choice was made of poppies, white and yellow daisies, blue and small orange flowers reminiscent of a memory. I chose strong, bold colors – as is customary for Ukrainians. Sewing the quilt was slow, all the details of all the flowers had to be basted down one by one by hand, then the flower hearts were put in place. After placing the composition on the quilt, it took several days to sew the flowers together – it was as if I had to draw over all the edges with a machine. However, the result is chemical-free in the sense that I did not use a single drop of glue, adhesive fabric or other auxiliary material. The result was achieved purely with the help of a needle and thread:)
The quilt was originally ordered by a client, but our idea changed during the work process, which is why he ended up with another job. However, since the flowers were almost ready by the time I changed my mind, I decided to finish what I had started in its original form, I hope it will find a happy owner after all!
Considering the current circumstances, I donated half of the sale price of the quilt to Kuressaare Hospital SA to fight the coronavirus.
